History of the Guess brand
Guess is an American clothing brand and retailer. In addition to clothing for both men and women, Guess markets other fashion accessories such as watches, jewelry, perfumes, bags and shoes.
Guess was born in 1981 in California from the initiative and genius of the four Marciano brothers: Georges, Armand, Paul, Maurice, Jews of Moroccan origin and raised in Marseille. The Marciano family has small clothing shops scattered between Marseille, Toulon, Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Tropez. During a vacation in the United States, Georges notices that in the USA the denim pants are all a bit the same (the only difference is a different decoration in the back pocket) and there are no stonewash jeans, the process that makes them suitably worn but also makes the fabric more malleable and therefore able to accommodate the female form. So in 1981 the Marciano brothers opened a shop in Los Angeles, in Beverly Hills, importing stone washing from Europe. Georges also convinces Bloomingdale’s to put his line of denim jeans on sale in his flagship store in New York which is initially called Marilyn and has three zippers. A success.
In 1982 it was Paul Marciano who guessed the right promotional campaign for the brand, changed into Guess with a question. In fact, the question mark (“?”) The logo recalls the English meaning of the word “guess”.
Georges will say that he saw, without yet knowing English, a billboard that said: “Guess which is the best burger? Big Boy”. And he will add: “Guess what? I didn’t even know what it meant but I thought it sounded good in all languages.”
In 2011, the company’s turnover was $ 2.7 billion, up 8% from the 2.5 billion recorded the previous year. Sales are driven by the Asian market, which jumped 25%. It directly operates 420 stores in the United States and Canada and another 360 in Europe, Asia and South America.
